Frequently Asked Questions

The following are some of Hollandia Gardens’ most frequently asked questions. If you don’t find an answer, please feel free to contact us. From large-scale issues to everyday advice, our trained experts are here to help.

Q: How do I cut back hydrangeas?

A: It all depends on what type of hydrangea that you have planted.  If you have hydrangea macrophylla (large-leaf Hydrangeas--Annabelles for example), just cut back the canes that have bloomed that season.  All other hydrangea types can be cut back to the ground.

Q: What should I do to my lawn in the fall months to prepare it for winter?

A: Starting in September, apply your last round of fertilizer and also aerate your lawn.  You can also apply a broad-leaf herbicide.  Then in October you can start to cut your lawn a little shorter than normal

Q: I have a problem with deer eating my yews in the wintertime. What can I do to better protect them?

A: Short of trying to bait the deer with carrots and then hauling out your 12-gauge, pump-action shotgun with tripod accessory...you can wrap your yews in burlap for the winter. Just remember to un-wrap them when the weather turns warmer.

Q: I recently planted a hedge of Blue Holly in my backyard. I was disappointed this year not to see any berries. Am I doing something wrong?

A: Hollies are shrubs that require both male and female plants in order to produce berries. Check your plant tags to see if you accidentally planted all males or all females. If you planted all males, you will have to replace all but one with female hollies. If you planted all female shrubs, but forgot the male, you can tuck in a one-gallon male holly behind the hedge and that should be enough to produce red berries. If you still are having problems producing berries, contact Hollandia for additional help.

Q: My forsythia is growing out of control!  It needs some major pruning. When is the best time for me to prune?

A: You should prune your forsythia immediately AFTER it is finished flowering. This will help ensure that that you do not prune off any buds that are set for flowering the following year. If you are doing major pruning, remember to NOT prune away more that 40% of the total plant in one year.
